Oral Health Care Tips When You’re Pregnant

Our providers are dedicated to making sure you experience the healthiest oral health possible during your pregnancy. Our comprehensive line of dental services helps ensure you do just that as you approach your due date and beyond.
When you’re pregnant, the hormones your body produces affect your gums and teeth, making it easier for you to develop dental problems. In fact, up to 75% of pregnant women in America develop early-stage gum disease.
To keep your gums and teeth healthy, here’s a look at our top four tips for caring for your oral health when you’re expecting.
1. Have regular dental checkups
Changes to your body during pregnancy can increase oral health issues while you’re expecting. Pregnant women can develop gingivitis (gum inflammation) which can cause more serious issues, such as gum disease and tooth loss.
It’s safe to get regular dental checkups throughout your pregnancy, and the American Dental Association recommends sticking to your appointment schedule. If it’s been over six months since your last visit, schedule a dental exam and cleaning as soon as possible.
When you call, be sure to let our office know you’re expecting and when you’re due. Also, be sure to keep up with scheduled appointments after your baby is born.
2. Practice good oral hygiene
You might feel more tired than normal, which makes it easy to skip your dental routine. But while you’re pregnant, it’s important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. If you get morning sickness, rinse your mouth after vomiting to prevent the excess acids from damaging your teeth.
3. Eat healthy teeth
When you’re expecting, you’re eating for two, so chances are you’re already thinking about getting the right nutrition. Aim to eat foods that promote healthy teeth and gums, too, for both you and your developing baby.
Avoid processed foods and those high in sugar. Instead, fill up on whole foods like fresh fruits and veggies, whole-grain products like brown rice, and lean proteins like beans and legumes. Opt for whole fats, like avocados, rather than processed oils.
4. Drink for optimal oral health
You already know drinking lots of water and staying hydrated plays a role in a healthy pregnancy. But did you know it also helps you maintain optimal oral health? Sip on water instead of sugary drinks like sodas and sweetened teas and coffees.
When possible, drink tap water that’s been fluoridated, which helps prevent cavities and other dental issues. You can filter the tap water without removing fluoride. Be sure to avoid alcohol.
